Kidney as a Homeostatic Organ - Simplified for WAEC, NECO and JAMB

Today, we are going to study one of the most important organs in the body, the kidney and how it helps in the regulation of the internal environment (homeostasis). So, if you are preparing for any biology related exams, this post is for you.

What is Homeostasis?

It is necessary to understand what homeostasis is. i means maintaining a stable internal environmental condition. like maintaining stable internal temperature, water balance, even when the external environmental conditions are changing.

The Roles of the Kidney

The kidney is bean-shape organ located just below the rib cage. it performs the functions below:

* Removal of waste products

* Regulation of water balance

*Control salt and ions levels in the body

* Maintain pH level of the blood

* regulation of blood pressure

How the Kidney Performs its Functions

* filtration of the blood

*re absorption  of water and vitamins

* Secretion of hormone (ADH) Anti Diuretic Hormone

* Excretion

The above functions are involve in the process of formation of urine, that is how urine is formed and how removal of waste products  are made possible by the kidney.

The Need for Homeostatic activities in the Body

if the kidney don't work very well, the body system cannot control water levels, blood pressure and waste products, it will result to serious problem in the body
