The United States Embassy in Nigeria has issued a serious warning to its citizens ahead of the scheduled “Free Nnamdi Kanu Now” demonstration in the capital city of Abuja on Monday, October 20.
Sources say the march—organised by activists demanding the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, who has been in custody since June 2021—will push through key central areas including Eagle Square and the Central Business District.
In its advisory, the Embassy emphasised: roadblocks, major traffic jams and potential confrontations between security forces and protesters are very likely—and could escalate into violent clashes.
Accordingly, American citizens are urged to:
* Avoid the protest areas entirely.
* Minimise movement across Abuja on the day.
* Keep children indoors and hold off commuting staff who would travel into the city from outside.
* Stay alert: Avoid crowds, monitor local media, keep your phone charged, carry identification.
This alert comes as authorities brace for tensions in a city already on high-alert. Residents and visitors in Abuja are therefore cautioned to plan ahead, steer clear of large gatherings, and take every precaution to remain safe.
