Nigeria Bans Admission and Transfer Into SS3 to Curb Exam Malpractice

‎Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Education has banned all admissions and transfers into SS3 starting from the 2026/27 academic year to curb examination

The Federal Government has announced a nationwide ban on the admission and transfer of students into Senior Secondary School Three (SS3) in all public and private secondary schools across Nigeria. The move is part of a broader effort to tackle rising examination malpractice and uphold academic integrity.

‎According to a statement issued by the Federal Ministry of Education, the new policy will take effect from the 2026/2027 academic session. Under the directive, schools will only be allowed to admit or transfer students into Senior Secondary School One (SS1) and Senior Secondary School Two (SS2). Admissions or transfers into SS3 will be prohibited in all circumstances.

‎The ministry explained that the ban aims to curb examination abuse, particularly the trend of last-minute student transfers that are believed to give unfair advantages or facilitate malpractice in national exams. Officials said the practice undermines the credibility of Nigeria’s education system and weakens academic continuity.

‎School proprietors, principals, and administrators have been directed to fully comply with the policy. The ministry warned that any violations will attract sanctions under existing education regulations and guidelines.

‎Reaffirming the government’s commitment to quality education, the statement emphasized that the directive is part of sustained efforts to promote fairness, strengthen academic monitoring, and restore public confidence in national examinations across the country.

‎Parents and stakeholders are expected to adapt to the new arrangement, which educational authorities say is necessary to ensure proper learning progression and uphold standards in the secondary school system.
